CHANDIGARH: Punjab higher education minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Sunday ordered a thorough probe after rumours of objectionable videos of some woman students of Chandigarh University going viral on social media.

Protest erupted on the campus following the alleged video leak. The protesters alleged that a woman student made videos of girls taking bath in the hostel, that later went viral on social media. They also claimed that some girl students living in the hostel attempted suicide following the incident.
A top university official denied the claims.
RS Bawa, pro-chancellor, Chandigarh University said, “There are rumors that 7 girls have committed suicide whereas the fact is that no girl has attempted any such step. No girl has been admitted to hospital in the incident."

Bawa further said, “During the preliminary investigation conducted by the university there has been no video found of any student which is objectionable except a personal video shot by a girl which she herself shared with her boyfriend."
Police however said the woman student accused in the matter has been arrested.
"The suspect girl had sent her own videos to her boyfriend in Shimla. Other girls in hostel saw her shooting video while she was in washroom and in panic thought she is shooting videos of other girls," said senior superintendent of police, Mohali Vivek Soni.

"Forensic evidence is being collected. So far no attempt to suicide has been reported. Medical records of students have been taken on record. People should not pay attention to any rumours," he added.
The protest was held on the university campus located at Ludhiana-Chandigarh road past midnight. During the protest, students shouted slogans, 'We want justice'. Police had to cane-charge students to disperse them.
Police said an investigation into the matter was under way.

Punjab school education minister HS Bains on Twitter appealed to Chandigarh University students to remain calm and assured them that the guilty won't be spared.
"I humbly request all the students of Chandigarh University to remain calm, the guilty will not be be spared. It’s a very sensitive matter and relates to dignity of our sisters and daughters. We all including media should be very very cautious, it is also test of ours now as a society," he tweeted.

AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday tweeted that the culprits would get the 'harshest punishment'.
"In Chandigarh University, a girl recorded objectionable videos of many girl students. This is very serious and shameful. All the culprits involved in this will get the harshest punishment. Victim girls have courage. We are all with you. All act with patience," he tweeted.
Union Minister and BJP leader Som Parkash also demanded strict action against the culprits. "It is an unfortunate incident. Police should take serious action against those involved in this incident so that such incidents do not occur again," the BJP leader said.
